The Polar Sea 360°

An app using VR technology which allows the user to plunge headfirst into the Arctic world.

Polar Sea’s creators wanted their project to use a number of different media, so that the audience felt as if they were traveling through the Arctic. Their aim wasn’t to educate people, but to move them, and make them realize that climate change affects everyone. That’s why the producers used virtual reality. The telephone app and the glasses make the user feel like they’ve been transported to a different world.

The app is part of a broader transmedia project on the Arctic, which also includes the first ever documentary film shot in 360 degree technology, in which spherical images were integrated with traditional video footage.

The project has already received the German Grimme Online Award for innovative web-based cultural and entertainment projects.
