Służew

An audiovisual reportage about Warsaw’s Służew neighbourhood. Using texts and photographs, Filip Springer documents NInA’s immediate surroundings.

Filip Springer on how the project came about:

,,
Agnieszka Słodownik wrote to me that the National Audiovisual Institute is moving into a new headquarters and asked if I would like to write something about Służew’s architectural foundations. I died inside a bit. No, I wouldn’t. But then she added: We’re seeing this building as a palimpsest. We come here, and imbue it with some new meaning, but we’re not the first to do so. She had me there. Sly vixen.
,,

The project’s publisher is dwutygodnik.com, an Internet magazine published by NInA. Its editor in chief, Zofia Król, explains Służew’s genesis thusly:

,,
We made it an audiovisual reportage in an attempt to transcend the established forms of newspaper narrative and get closer to the people and the surroundings we see every day – also through how we shaped the story, through a different rhythm of engaging with the text.
,,

The story took on the shape of an Internet website designed by Michał Szota in a way that makes text, image, and video equal elements of the narrative. It doesn’t have a defined beginning or end, encouraging a nonlinear reading, and moves between three points of view: that of a village, a housing estate, and a garden. Side by side, we have here a game of bridge played on a balcony, goats at Służewski Dom Kultury (Służew Community Center), and the futuristic NInA server rooms.
