Provincial Actors, dir. Agnieszka Holland, 1978, 121 minutes
In a a provincial Polish theatre in the 1970s, a visiting director from Warsaw plans to stage Stanisław Wyspiański's 1903 play Liberation, with Krzysztof Malewski in the leading role of Konrad. For the talented but unfulfilled 30-year-old actor, this is the chance of a lifetime. However, as the production develops, he gradually notices that the director's avant-garde approach is trivialising the text and that everyone else is indifferent to the project. Malewski's frustration and urge to rebel is exacerbated by these professional issues overlapping with his own personal problems: in particular, his marriage to Anna, an equally unfulfilled actress in puppet theatre, is in crisis.
The movie will be shown with English subtitles.
