Another World, directed by Dorota Kędzierzawska, is a film about a world that is no more. Danuta Szaflarska is our narrator and guide to the stories and culture that shaped her as a person. The film’s frugal visual layer, comprising mostly black and white photography by Arthur Reinhart, interspersed with images from Szaflarska’s own archives as well as footage from such pictures as Forbidden Songs, The Treasure, A Farewell to Maria, and Time to Die, binds together the digressive, reminiscent, and funny story told by the actress.
The running time of the film is 97 minutes, a direct reference to Szaflarska’s age at the time of production. At the premiere, Culture Minister Bogdan Zdrojewski joked that the film should be extended by one minute every year. The movie was in fact expanded with three minutes of new footage to mark the actress’s 100th birthday. The expanded version of the film is available on the DVD edition of Another World, published by NInA.
The film will be shown with English subtitles.
